We're delighted to welcome Geoff Plant back to The Ear Foundation for our second Twilight Lecture of 2010

Cochlear implants have provided many profoundly deaf people with reliable access to speech, but music remains a more contentious issue, despite great technological advances over the past 20 years.  This presentation will focus on recent attempts to make music a more effective part of CI users' "acoustic environments."

The first half of the presentation will focus on the use of music with children. The importance of rhythm and rhyme will be considered, as will the use of simple poems and songs for training.  Special attention will be paid to "The Farmer's Cheese," a musical specially composed for children with CI's.

The second half of the presentation will look at music for adults with CI's.  This is a more difficult area, as many adults bring a memory of music, and regard the signal presented via CI's as lacking in many areas.

Effective strategies for helping adult CI users' better appreciate music will be reviewed.  These include the provision of Music Focus Groups and concerts aimed at CI users.  "Deacon," a recent work composed for CI users will be reviewed.

Segments of both "The Farmer's Cheese" and "Deacon" will be played during the presentation.
